If you want to be successful with your work at home opportunity then it is important to remember that you need to “work smarter not harder”. If you are anything like me you will have learnt that lesson the hard way, if indeed you have learnt that lesson at all. I was brought up with the “work hard” ethic and I suppose it has taken me most of my life to realize that if I want any measure of success then working smarter is what it is going to take.

I started to look at work at home opportunities almost 18 months ago. During that time I realized that I was wasting a lot of time flitting from one site to another kidding myself that I was learning lots of valuable lessons about internet marketing. My inbox was permanently full of emails that were responding to my request for further information. To begin with I read as many as possible, convinced that the golden nugget was going to be buried somewhere in the middle of them, the Holy Grail that would unlock the door of success. Of course it never happened.

As time went by my search for a legitimate work at home business got easier. I started to be able discern the scam from the genuine article. The world of work especially in the corporate world, has become a very stressful place to be. Accountability, targets, excessive paperwork to name but a few have all added to the stress and are part of the reason why so many people are looking for opportunities to work at home.

The difference between those who are successful with their work at home business and those who are struggling is the action of goal setting and mindset. Goal setting is not a passive activity. It is no use writing your goals down, you must also expect them to happen and actively do whatever it takes to manifest them. Goal setting is the single most important ingredient if you are to be successful especially if you want to work at home.

There are many opportunities available online for people who want to work at home ranging from data entry jobs to writing and ebook or even selling products on ebay. But if you don’t set yourself goals you will never get off base one and your work at home business will remain a pipe dream.

A work at home business needs a very different mind set from that required in a 9-5 job. It also needs very different skills and abilities. Having worked in a school for almost 20 years of my working life I found the transition to working at home much more difficult than I had anticipated. I was of the mind that goals were “not my thing” and I resisted for almost 2 years, but when I realized I had had jumped from one work at home opportunity to another without even realizing what I was doing, that I decided it was time for a change.

When you work at home, especially in the early days, it is easy to think that every opportunity presented to you is the answer to your dreams, and before you know where you are, you have spread yourself so thinly that non of your opportunities stand a chance. I now firmly believe that one opportunity is the best way forward. My main goal now is to stick with that opportunity for at least 12 months and to set my minor goals within those parameters. A huge weight has lifted off my shoulders as I now know I can give my business all my attention and energy and my dream to work at home now has a chance of being realized.

Another of my goals at the moment is to ensure that I have the best tools for my home business. Although this will push me out of my comfort zone financially I know it is the right decision as it will enable me to optimize my time and reduce my frustrations when trying to work with inadequate equipment.

The decision to work at home is not an easy one, nor is it easy to carry it out once the decision has been made. It requires grit and determination if you are to be successful. It also needs a positive approach so that you don’t fall at the first hurdle. My own opinion, 2 years down the road, is that my decision to work at home was a good one. If I had known the time it was gong to take when I started I may not have taken it on, but I am so glad that I did.

If you really want to work at home you can. Believe in yourself and attract the right people into your work life, as that can make a huge difference, especially if you are looking for a team to work with.
